There’s a common assumption that outdoor photography sessions should be reserved for spring and fall. But I’ve found winter to be an unexpectedly beautiful time for portraits—especially in a place like Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC.
Even in December, Reynolda has a quiet elegance to it. The evergreens stay vibrant, the architecture adds charm, and the soft winter light makes everything feel calm and unhurried. It’s one of those places that really does photograph well year-round.
The Eversmanns brought their newborn son and their black lab (who might be the most photogenic dog I’ve ever met) for their first session as a family of three. Their approach to the session felt laid-back and present, which made space for the kinds of images that feel like real memories.
Winter doesn’t need to be avoided when it comes to planning a family session. In fact, it can offer a totally different pace and tone—less about the backdrop, and more about connection. And for families with little ones, there’s something really special about marking the early months in a season that already invites you to slow down.
If you’re looking for a family photographer in North Carolina who offers a relaxed, detail-driven approach (and yes, film photography too), I’m here for it. Reynolda Gardens is a favorite, but there are beautiful pockets of Winston-Salem and beyond that work just as well—even in the colder months.
