Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Your Engagement Session
This spring, I photographed Morgan & Cal’s engagement session at Reynolda Gardens. They brought their sweet chocolate lab for photos! I love when couples bring their pups to sessions because they are part of the family too!
If you’re thinking about bringing your dog to your engagement session, here are a few helpful tips to make sure the experience goes smoothly and is fun for everyone.
1. Bring Treats
This one’s a must! Bringing your pup’s favorite treats will help them so much. I can hold them near the camera to get their attention, and it’s a great way to reward good behavior throughout the session.
2. Think About Your Leash & Collar
We’ll likely keep your dog on a leash for most of the session, so it’s worth bringing one that photographs well. A neutral or leather leash looks timeless in photos and won’t be distracting in your images.
3. Bring a Helper
If possible, bring a parent, friend, or sibling who your dog knows and trusts. They can help wrangle your pup when we’re taking photos without them and keep them company during the rest of the session.
4. Be Patient & Don’t Worry
Your pup likely has never posed for photos before, and that’s totally okay! They may be excited and easily distracted at first. We’ll take our time and make sure we get plenty of sweet photos of them. And if they need a quick break to run around, we’ll make it happen.
5. Take Them for a Walk Earlier in the Day
A little exercise before the session can help your pup get their energy out, making them calmer for photos. Just don’t go right before your session because we don’t want them completely worn out (or extra drooly!).
If you’re planning your engagement session and want to include your pup, I’d love to make it happen. You can reach out to learn more here.
