One thing is for certain, your life is busy when you have kids. Gathering everyone together, coordinating outfits, and all smiling at the same time may seem impossible. I totally understand that. You may feel the desire to skip professional family photos, because its easier to snap a photo on your iPhone. But I promise, your kids will appreciate looking back at your photo albums when they are older.
Here’s where I step in. This is the reason I’m writing this blog post – so that you know what your experience will be like with me as your family photographer. I’m writing this so that you can take a deep breath and know that you are being taken care of. Your family portraits are in the right hands. The season of life you’re in will be captured well and it won’t be stressful.
So, from the beginning, let’s talk about what your family portrait experience will look like with me.
First, you’ll inquire and tell me about your family. I’d love to hear about your family, how old your kids are, the routines that fill your days, what you guys like to do together. These details are the heart of what makes your family unique. This helps me approach your session knowing what matters most to you and truly serve you well.
Second, we’ll decide on a date and location for your family portraits. We’ll pick somewhere close to your home, so your kiddos won’t be restless from riding in the car. We could even do your portraits in your backyard – or your living room! The key here is comfort. I want your kids to be comfortable in front of my camera – that’s where their true personality shines. Is there a park nearby that your kids are familiar with? Do you spend time with your kids in your backyard? That’s the place to do your photos.
Third, I’ll send you my guide for family portraits. This covers everything from what to expect at your session, practical outfit inspiration and tips for both men & women (with Pinterest board links!), and a family portrait shoot checklist that you can use before you walk out the door to ensure you have everything. You will be more than prepared when you arrive!
Then, it’s shoot day! Here’s a reminder – take a deep breath. We’re not in a rush. When we meet, I’ll take time to greet your kids and get to know them a little bit, helping them feel at ease. We’ll begin with the classic “everyone smile at the camera!” photos while your kids are attentive and not bored yet. Because I know those are the ones you’re going to hang on the wall. Gradually, we will start to do more fun prompts – we might play ring around the rosie or another game your kids love. We’ll walk from spot to spot and capture your family just the way they are. We will let your kids take a break from smiling and capture a few photos of you and your spouse. Maybe they are the first good photos you’ve had since your wedding day.
Relaxed. Fun. Confident. Nostalgic. Assured. Love. Excitement. Heard. Present. Sentimental. Joy.
These are the words that I strive for you to feel during your photography experience with me. I’m here to take your photos. Yes – that’s my job. But I’m here to serve you, to get to know your family, so I can genuinely capture who your family is. I want you to feel confident in your preparations for your session, comfortable when you step in front of my camera, and so excited when you get your photos back.
Your family’s story is worth preserving—not just for today, but for the years ahead. If you’re ready for a portrait experience that’s personal, thoughtful, and free of unnecessary stress, I’d love to work with you.
